Hier ist meine Präsentation zum Thema Datenschutz im Internet, die ich leider nicht vortragen konnte. Nach der Folie “Datenschutz in der Kontroverse” wollte ich gern noch eine Diskussionsrunde eröffnen, in der ihr eure Einschätzung zur Bedeutung des Datenschutzes  hättet preisgeben können.

Rabat ist eine kleine Stadt, die südwestlich auf Malta liegt.

Eigentlich hatten wir während  der Kursfahrt einen Ausflug dorthin geplant, den wir jedoch aufgrund von Zeitmangel nicht machen konnten.

Rabat zeichnet sich vor allem durch seine Lebendigkeit,  durch schöne Bauwerke aus Kalkstein sowie viele kleine Gassen aus. Ein kleiner Abstecher dorthin würde sich sicherlich lohnen und vielleicht kann ich euch mit meiner Präsentation ja etwas von dem maltesischen Flair nahebringen;)

He was born in Shoreham, Long Island in 1917 as the son of Elizabeth Wheeler, impregnated by Julian Barber ( Thomas Effing ) who left his wife in 1916 wanting to go on an artistic expedition to the American West. Solomon was an only child who grew up in Shoreham, living with his mother, a cook named Molly Sharp and later also his aunt Clara and his uncle Binkey in a big house. His mother gained mental- health problems after the abandonment of her son´s father and was  nursed by many companions and helpers, because of her illness she was isolated from her child. When Solomon was seventeen years old, five years before his mother passed away, he had started writing a book about the leaving of his father, called “Kepplers Blood” which Marco would read years later.Graduated from Highschool in 1936 he relocated to New York and for four years attended Columbia College and later on Graduate school in history where he became very successful. After having gained the American Studies Awards in 1944 for his writing on American history, Barber was offered positions in many universities.Thus, he moved to Ohio where he became a favoured teacher and tutored Emily Fogg, who joined his classes in 1945 and started a love affair with him which entailed the losing of his job.For he always had  been overweight and he had never been attractive to women, Emily was the first person having sex with him not being a prostitute. Since he had been a child, he loved eating and in his adolescence he even started bingeing which is why his weight quickly arose to 250 pounds. Over the years he had gained more and more weight and it peaked out, after he had moved to Cleveland when he weighed even 350 pounds.When he was fifteen, he already reached his adult height, which lies between six- two and six- three, so he was and still is very tall and eye- catching for other people who often stare and make jokes of him. When Marco meets him the first time, he can hardly believe, Effing, who was a very small and skinny person has fathered a son like him. He had started wearing hats since he had lost his hair over the years and he developed a weakness for smoking cigars.As he always had been the living target of  his fellow men´s mockeries he became a very sensible person, got isolated by the rest of the world feeling lonely and especially in his period in Cleveland he felt the stares of the others while he was walking down the streets and got very sad about it.Eventually, he always put the blame on himself because he knew it were his excessive ways of eating being responsible for the way he looked. For never had met his father and his mother passed away when he had been a child, he had never had a person to whom he could commit all his problems and so he started reading books, constructing his own world, a place where he was able to avoid his loneliness and his attacks of guilt. Solomon Barber is a very intellectual person who has on the one hand always been very interested in American history  especially in the American West and Virgin America and on the other hand was affected by the leaving of his father and wrote a book to cope with it, inventing a character like his father who had to live in the wilderness.When Marco wants to inform Solomon about the death of Effing, he finds out he is faced with his own son.They both decide to try finding the cave of Thomas Effing in the desert in Utah but they first stop in Chicago visiting Emily Fogg´s grave and in the course if a heavy argument, Solomon Barber falls into a fresh grave and breaks his legs. After a short period in the hospital, he dies.

Kakutani finds remarkable that in Auster´s novel “Moon Palace” there are so many coincidences and parallels concerning on the one hand the connections and relationships between the characters especially between Kitty Wu, Marco and Barber and on the other hand the common grounds of the protagonist and Effing. They are both interested in the moon and in exploration for example and have already lived in the wilderness.
Furthermore Mr. Kakutani admires Auster´s awareness of literary history, so that the story contains a lot of devices like symbols, allusions and inside jokes.

Dumb and Dumber:

-Bryson focuses on negative sides
of America ( the dumbing down because of
the media)

-In the beginning third- person narrator
turns into a first- person narrator in the course
of the story

-B. concentrates more on the generality

Differences:

Friendly People:

- B. focuses on the good sides of
the American society (- kindness
of the population)

– In the hole story, there is a first- person
narrator

– Bryson concentrates on his own family, life
and experiences ( We feel closer to the
narrator)

Similarities:

- Both stories have got a humorous touch
- In both stories Bryson uses irony and sarcasm
- Bryson uses common speech ( slangs like :”bitch, bitch, bitch” p.46 )

In the beginning Bryson´s wife criticizes the fact he always concentrates on the disadvantages of the American life in his stories and so he decides to rather reflect the good sides.
First, the author describes how cordially he and his family have been welcomed by the neighbours after having moved to New Hampshire and how they always have served them and still do.
In his hometown everybody is very kind, everyone cares for each other and even makes gifts.
As there is no crime and there are no thieves, no one ever has to lock a door or a car, everybody trusts each other.
